FACULTY FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE, YOUTH AND SPORTS OF UKRAINE
TARAS SHEVCHENKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF KYIV
The Faculty of Sociology
Andrii Gorbachyk, Dean of the Faculty of Sociology, Associate Professor, Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics
Ukrainian Sociology has emerged alongside democracy and independence. In Ukraine professional training in sociology was introduced for the first time in 1986 within the walls of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. In 1991 the first professional sociologists of Ukraine graduated from the University and the Faculty of Sociology and Psychology was founded. The time coincidence between the opportunity to acquire a quality education in sociology and democratization of social and political life in Ukraine is not accidental, given that sociology is the social science that provides a clear understanding of democratic processes in politics and of operation of market in economy. Therefore, sociologists are experts who are always in demand in democratic countries with market economies. The constant increase in demand for highly qualified sociologists stimulated the establishment of a separate Faculty of Sociology in 2007 and increase in its student enrolment. As a result, in 2011 the expanded Faculty moved to a new building.
Although the Faculty of Sociology is one of the youngest faculties at the University, its establishment was preceded by a long history of formation and development of sociological scholarship at the University. Almost simultaneously with introduction of sociology at the West European and American universities, in the 1870s Mykhaylo Drahomanov presented this new social science to students of Kyiv University. At the turn of the century, the University has already provided courses in political economy, statistics, ethnology, social anthropology, and social science. In 1900 associate professor Oleksii Gren delivered the first course of lectures in sociology at the University of Kyiv.

Study at the Faculty is founded on this intersection of tradition and modernity. Its students master traditional disciplines, such as the history of sociology and a gamut of subjects of general learning, and the latest trends in theory and methods, including the newest software for online surveys, statistical analysis of databases, analysis of social networks, and the most recent theoretical trends in world sociology. We offer innovative courses that are not taught at other universities in Ukraine: the theory of causality in sociology, social networks analysis, sociological theories of globalization, neo-functionalist and poststructuralist theories, ethnic and migration processes in contemporary societies, etc.
Today the Faculty is a modern laboratory of fundamental and applied social research, international collaboration, and intellectual development.
There are four Departments at the Faculty:
methodology and methods of sociological research;
theory and history of sociology;
branch sociologies;
social structures and social relations.
Students at the internship: manageability of the fieldwork depends on good sample design and clear division of tasks
The Faculty offers courses in sociology at three educational levels: Bachelor (four years), Specialist (one year), and Master (two years).
Master’s, postgraduate, and PhD studies at the Faculty enable its graduates to develop themselves in research and teaching. The Faculty publishes two professional journals and has a specialised Academic Council for the defence of dissertations in all sociological fields.
An essential component of the education process is internship, in the course of which students get involved for a month into a real sociological research based on the methods of comparative international surveys. At the university students can obtain professional experience for employment in research, marketing, analytics, politics, or consulting agencies. During another internship month, Master’s students learn to lecture in social sciences at universities, as they acquire the qualification of Research Fellow (Sociology), Lecturer of Sociology, Sociologist.
For education and leisure students have access to a large library of professional literature, computer lab, wireless Internet, dormitories, extensive resources of the Faculty’s website and, above all, friendly support and assistance from the administrative and teaching staff.
Today graduates of the Faculty advance Ukrainian science in academic institutions, conduct research in analytical agencies, investigate market conditions and develop marketing strategies for businesses, provide information support for election campaigns, develop political and social technologies for the government and NGOs, as well as teach sociology at universities.
