TARAS SHEVCHENKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF KYIV

The Faculty of Radio Physics

Ihor Oleksiyovych Anisimov, Dean of the Faculty of Radio Physics, Professor, Doctor of Science (Physics and Mathematics), Honored Award-Winner in Science and Technology of Ukraine.

The Faculty of Radio Physics at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a leading academic centre for the study of Applied Physics (Radio Physics and Electronics) and Computer Engineering in Ukraine. Study at the Faculty provides profound knowledge in physics, mathematics, radio electronics, leading-edge computer technology as well as an in-depth study of English, with Master’s degree students having the opportunity to study some disciplines in foreign languages. The Faculty is well-equipped with computers: at every lab students can use the Internet to obtain necessary information from around the world. During the teaching process, developments of leading companies in information technology (Microsoft, Intel, Cisco Systems, Huawei and others) are used. Lectures and seminars are conducted not only by lecturers of the Faculty, but also by leading experts at the National Academy of Science of Ukraine and those with both academic and applied knowledge from other institutions. The teaching staff includes 3 Members and 4 Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, and more than 50 Professors. Senior undergraduate students of Applied Physics also receive fundamental vocational and professional training at graduating departments:
1. Electron Physics: students study plasma physics and the physics of solid state surfaces, plasma electronics, plasma chemistry, plasma technologies, emission electronics, gaseous sensors and ecological usage of plasmas
2. Nanophysics and Nano-Electronics: students study the physics and nanophysics of surfaces, high temperature physics, mobile communications, computer processing of information, the phenomena that occur in hyper-miniaturized and microwave radio circuits, the creation of holographic records and the reproduction of information
3.  Medical Radio Physics: students study physics focused on use in medical and biological establishments. These fields include methods of medical diagnostics and treatment based on modern achievements in physics and electronics, the basics of biophysics and a profound study of computer technologies
4.  Quantum Radio Physics: experts in the fields of advanced communications, telecommunication systems, lasers, fibre-optic information systems research the properties of electromagnetic waves in a wide frequency range - from radio to ultraviolet
5. Solid-state Electronics: students study the physics and technology of semiconductors for creating photo-converter for solar energy, and research in nanostructures and spintronics.
6. Applied Optics and Magnetism: students study the nanostructure materials and biological systems by optical, magnetic and electro- physical methods.

The discipline of Computer Engineering combines electronics and computer science and provides vocational training in electronics, software, and the integration of hardware and software. Computer engineers conduct research in the field of automation which relies on the use of digital technology to manage and control electronic systems. Tasks related to computer engineering include creating software for integrated microcontrollers, designing electronic systems, sensors using analog signals, mixed-signal circuit boards and the design of systems applications.

The discipline of Radio Engineering has a range of subjects which include: research and development of equipment; production and maintenance of devices; systems and facilities for the generation, formation and management of radiation receivers; the processing and reproduction of information in radio and optical wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. Experts in radio successfully work and conduct research in the fields of telecommunications, radar, radio equipment design, and IT technology.

The high level of undergraduate and postgraduate study is based on corresponding levels of scientific research. This balance may be demonstrated by the recognition of the importance of our work by Society. For example, 23 staff of the Faculty have been awarded State Prizes of the USSR and Ukraine, and many of our scientists have been honoured as prizewinners at National and International contests. The research work of the Faculty is supported both academically and financially by domestic and foreign organizations. Academic staff work alongside students in research laboratories. The best students may travel abroad for further study - to the U.S.A, Britain, France, Germany, Japan, China, Holland, and others.
Students have the opportunity to stay at a Hall of Residence, and may also receive military training under the reserve contract for officers provided at the Military Institute of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
Graduates of the Faculty may be employed in various sectors as engineers, researchers, or managers of research institutions of different ownership companies. A quarter of our graduates submit higher postgraduate degree theses, and each sixteenth graduate will eventually submit their PhD and DSc thesis. Many talented graduates have become leading experts at world-famous companies in Ukraine, such as Bosch, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Xerox, Motorola, Alcatel, Samsung,  Varta, Apple Computers, and Tetra Laval, as well as other prominent national developers of IT and  network technologies, such as Kvasar-Micro, VD MAIS, Obriy, MTS, KyivStar, Ukrtelecom, RomSat, and Lucky-Net. Among the graduates are Members of the Ukrainian Parliament and Local Government Authorities, Members of Central Government, City Mayors, prominent politicians, Rectors of national and private universities, heads of research, advertising, auditing agencies, publishers and some of graduates occupy high positions in newspapers, electronic media, etc.

Good luck to those who decide to devote their life to a wonderful, exciting and very important science!
