THE INSTITUTE OF PHILOLOGY


      Hryhorii Fokovych Semeniuk, Director of the Institute of Philology, Professor, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Honored Award-Winner in Science and Technology of Ukraine, Distinguished Educationalist of Ukraine, Head of the Contemporary Ukrainian Literature Department.

      The Institute of Philology at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a significant center for education and research in linguistics. It was founded in 2001 following the merger of the Faculty of Linguistics, the Faculty of Foreign Philology and the Department of Oriental Studies, maintaining the long-standing history heritage of studies in philology and linguistics of the University along with all the noble academic achievements and creative activities.

      Today, there are more than 3,000 full-time students and about 270 postgraduate students at the Institute. The Institute employs over 600 lecturers, 60 being Professors, 160 Associate Professors, and some 20 visiting scholars from overseas teaching at 32 departments and 25 research laboratories and academic centers.

      Students of the Institute learn over 30 languages. The largest number of students masters the Ukrainian language. The Institute also processes a unique range of expertise in Western Linguistics, preparing future teachers, researchers in foreign languages and literature, translators and interpreters from English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Modern Greek, Swedish and Romanian. As to the number of Oriental Languages learned, the Institute occupies a leading position among universities in Ukraine as well as in Europe. These languages include Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Turkish, and Japanese. Besides, students learn Russian, Polish, Belarusian, Czech, Croatian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Classical Latin and Greek languages and literature. All students of the Institute of Philology take a number of courses in the Ukrainian language and literature in addition to their core subjects.

      There are 17 Language and IT Centers for English, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Chinese, Korean, Persian, Turkish, Slavic, and other languages operating at the Institute.

      The Institute of Philology offers the subjects as follow: Philology of the Ukrainian, Slavonic, West European and Oriental Languages; the Modern Ukrainian Language; the Modern Slavonic, West European and Oriental Languages; History of Ancient, Modern and Contemporary Ukrainian Literature; World Literature from the ancient times to the present; Folklore Traditions, Culture of Western and Eastern Countries; World Regional Languages; Lexicology; Theoretical Grammar; Computer Linguistics (Modeling, Computerized Lexicography etc.); Sociolinguistics; Psycholinguistics; Stylistics; Theory and Practice of Translation; Methods in Teaching Foreign Languages, to name a few.

      The Institute issues 19 academic journals, 14 of which are validated by the Higher Board of Experts of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Since the foundation date nearly 141 monographs, 1,008 textbooks, more than 7,328 academic papers, and 99 dictionaries have been prepared and found their readers.

      For the recent ten years about 50 Doctorate and 371 Higher Postgraduate Degrees have been successfully conferred. There are four Specialized Academic Boards that are responsible for consideration and expertise of the theses submitted. Many of the Professors and Associate Professors of the Institute are members of the recognized academic institutions. The Institute possesses a unique range of expertise.

      The Departments and Centers of the Institute maintain exchange agreements with a large number of educational and academic institutions around the world (in over 60 countries). Under-, graduate, and postgraduate students as well as the Institute lecturers enjoy the opportunity to undergo instant internship courses or language training at educational establishments in Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, Italy, Germany, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Japan, China, South Korea, Turkey, and other countries. Excellent teaching facilities have been developed, including modern, well-equipped lecture theaters and laboratories.

      Several computer classrooms and laboratories of computer linguistics and experimental phonetics with the access to the Internet and to the electronic database of the University library have been equipped to facilitate language learning.

      Practical on-site studies are on regular basis to study folklore and dialectology in the picturesque area of Kaniv and the Carpathians. Students can master practical translation skills working at the Verkhovna Rada (the Parliament) of Ukraine, at diplomatic missions, at the Central Prosecutor’s Office of Ukraine, at travel agencies, and in the editorial offices of the mass media. Future archivists can improve their practical knowledge in libraries and museums of Ukraine, while future teachers may take practical supervision classes at educational institutions: tertiary schools, gymnasia, lyceums, and secondary schools.

      Graduates of the University can be successful candidates for the employment in various fields: in research, translation agencies, publishing houses, the Fine Arts, pedagogy (teaching at universities, institutes, specialized and general secondary schools), in governmental and civil offices, research-and-development and IT centers, the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and other Ministries of Ukraine, at embassies and diplomatic missions of Ukraine abroad.

      Today the Institute of Philology of the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv makes every effort to educate highly qualified and competitive graduates in various fields that are proficient in one or more foreign languages; that have the fundamental knowledge of the history of languages and literature, the theory of literature and general linguistics.

      The study at the Institute of Philology is provided on both full-time and part-time basis. Three degrees are awarded: Bachelor, Specialist, Master.


      Duration of Study:

Bachelor: full-time education – 4 years; part-time – 5 years.
Specialist: full-time education – 1 year; part-time – 1 year.
Master: full-time education – 2 years; part-time education – 2 years.


      Teaching Languages at the University are Ukrainian, Russian, English.
