FACULTY FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE, YOUTH AND SPORTS OF UKRAINE
TARAS SHEVCHENKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF KYIV
The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics
Mykhaylo Fedorovych Gorodnii, Dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics, Professor
Teaching and Researchin Mathematics and Mechanics have taken place at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv as far back as 1834, when the University was founded. The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics as an independent unit was established in 1940. Today it is considered to be the best faculty of this type in Ukraine. The Faculty has 9 Departments, 3 teaching and 2 research laboratories, and an IT unit. 25 Professors, 45 Associate Professors and 23 lecturers work at the Faculty on a regular basis. There are 4 scientific schools: Algebra, Differential and Integral Equations, Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics, and Mechanics.
The Faculty has the following Departments:
Department of Algebra and Mathematical Logic;
Department of Geometry;
Department of Integral and Differential Equations;
Department of General Mathematics;
Department of Mathematical Analysis;
Department of Mathematical Physics;
Department of Continua Mechanics;
Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics;
Department of Probability Theory, Statistics and Actuarial Mathematics.
The Faculty traditionally organizes a competition for applicants. The competition has two rounds – the first is remote and the second has to be attended in person. The remote round is open for all high school students who will graduate in the current year. The tasks for this round can be found at www.mechmat.univ.kiev.ua.
Education which the Faculty provides gives its graduates the opportunity to choose from a variety of professions: in academic and research institutes, design bureaus, educational establishments of different levels in Ukraine and abroad, computer centres, commercial and banking enterprises, and insurance companies.
From their third year on students receive tuition at their chosen departments, towards more narrow specialization:
Mathematical and Functional Analysis
Methods of Mathematical Modelling
Algebra and basics for the protection of information
Actuarial (Insurance) and Financial Mathematics
Geometry and Topology
Computer Mechanics
Differential Equations
Continua Mechanics
Mathematical Physics
Theoretical and Applied Mechanics
IT and Computational Mathematics
Mathematical Economics and Econometrics
Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes
Applied Mathematical Statistics.
The focus of the educational process for students at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is on the development of intellectual and analytical abilities of individuals, and on mastering the methods of independent research and learning new skills.
The quality of study at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics is proved by the results of its students’ participation in International Competitions in Mathematics. In International Competitions in Mathematics for university students the Faculty team took third place in 2012 and the student D. Radchenko took the absolute first place in the individual competition.
Thanks to the close working partnerships which Professors and Associate Professors of the Faculty have with their foreign counterparts, our best graduates are keenly sought after, and invited to take postgraduate courses at leading universities in the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, France.
A significant feature of education in mathematics is to a high extent its universal nature, which consequently protects it from devaluation over time. This is demonstrated by the important role that today mathematics plays in natural science and technology, economics, sociology, medicine and many other disciplines.
The scientific results of research in such abstract subjects as Number Theory and Group Theory may for example be applied to solve problems in information security. Recommendations of mathematicians-experts in operations research and management optimisation help to increase the efficiency of commercial activity, the management of enterprises and such complex technical subjects. Statistical and probability methods allow us to identify and analyse a range of trends in the economy. The creation of new technology and new forms of its operation requires the use of theoretical developments in such areas of mechanics as the Theory of Gyroscopes, the Theory of Elasticity, Aerohydrodynamics.
The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics offers full-time and part-time study and awards three types of degree – Bachelor, Specialist, and Master.
The tentative admission plan for first-year students under the Government budget, i.e. free, is:
full-time study – 70 entrants in Mathematics, 40 in Statistics, and 15 in Mechanics;
part-time study – 10 entrants in Mathematics.
Tuition fees for those admitted on a fee-paying contract are established independently each year for full-time and part-time study.
