      The Institute of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is a powerful research and study centre which provides vocational training for those wishing to work in the National mass-media sector in such areas as journalism, publishing and editing, advertising and public relations in the media industry. The formation of the Institute began when a Journalism Unit was created at the Faculty of Linguistics in 1947 and later, in 1953, a separate Faculty of Journalism was formed. The Institute of Journalism was founded in 1993, based on this faculty.

      The Institute has the following Departments:
- Social Communication;
- Publishing and Editing;
- Periodicals;
- History of Journalism;
- Television and Radio;
- Foreign languages;
- Film and teleart;
- Advertising and Public Relations;
- Language and Stylistics;
- Electronic Publications and Media Design.

      The Institute has become a renowned academic and applied vocational training centre where those wishing to work in the mass-media industry in Ukraine and abroad may study. There is a unique specialised academic council for the appraisal of Doctoral theses on social communication as part of the Institute’s structure. In addition, an academic and methodological commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine is located at the Institute.

      There are more than 20 Professors and PhDs, and some 30 staff with higher postgraduate degrees and Associate Professors teaching at the Departments of the Institute. Among them: Members of the Writers' Union of Ukraine, the Union of Journalists of Ukraine, Honored Workers of Science and Culture, Laureates of State and other prizes. The teaching staff includes chief editors, famous journalists and publicists, writers and translators. The Institute of Journalism provides postgraduate  and Doctoral studies.

      During the past five years, eight Doctoral theses, and over 100 higher postgraduate degree theses have been successfully submitted, and in this period 10 textbooks, over 40 monographs, 47 collections of research papers, about 160 course textbooks, and over 1300 academic papers have been published.

      Both scholarship and fee-paying students study under the same syllabus, which has been developed on the basis of the world's best Institutes and Schools of Journalism, and division into study groups is a general basis.

      There is a study scheme for an external degree available at the Institute of Journalism for those who have not less than ten years of experience in journalism – the scheme is offered on a fee-paying basis.

      Master-classes for students are conducted by professors of the Institute, leading producers of the BBC, under the program of joint activities within the framework of the European Commission's project "Top Media", and training sessions are given by Fulbright Scholars and others.

      The Institute holds annual conferences, which have become traditions, such as “Journalists’ Springtime”, anniversary academic readings dedicated to prominent personalities, there are competitions like “Miss Institute of Journalism”, “Mr. Institute of Journalism”, and Christmas caroling.
      The Institute was awarded a Diploma of Honor by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine in 2002 for its success in the vocational education of graduates and academic staff. The Institute became a prize-winner of the Fund of Social Recognition and won the title of "Golden Trade Mark” in 2003.

      Graduates of the Institute of Journalism work for national and regional publications, television and radio, national and international news agencies, press centers and the press services of various public and private organizations, publishing houses, advertising agencies and many others.

      From among the ten thousand journalists who have graduated from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv over the past fifty years, more than 100 have become writers, Doctors and academics, Associate Professors and Professors, Academicians, and 15 have been Laureates of the Taras Shevchenko State Prize of Ukraine.

      The Institute of Journalism provides full-time, distance-learning and external degree study at three educational levels - Bachelor, Specialist, Master.

Duration of study:
Bachelor: full-time - 4years, part-time - 5 years.
Specialist: full-time - 1 year, part-time - 1 year.
Master: full-time - 2years, part-time - 2 years.

The languages of study for foreign citizens at the University are Ukrainian, Russian and English.
