The Faculty of History is one of the oldest Faculties at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. For more than 175 years it has been at the heart of leading the study of History and has gained great experience in the vocational education of historians for academic research, archives and national tourist local history, the mass media, political, social organizations and other Government and private institutions. The Faculty has seen an outstanding group of historians and academics graduate, famous not only in Ukraine but also abroad. Among them are M. Maksymovych, the first Rector of the University, M. Kostomarov, V. Antonovych, M. Drahomanov, D. Bahaliy, M. Hrushevsky, O. Ohloblin, Y. Kondufor, Academicians, Heroes of Ukraine, P. Tron’ko, V. Lytvyn, and others.
The Faculty has the following Departments:
- Ancient and Modern History of Ukraine;
- Contemporary History of Ukraine;
- Modern and Contemporary History of Foreign Countries;
- Ancient and Middle Ages History;
- History of the Slavs;
- Archival Studies and Special Branches of Historical Science;
- History of Russia;
- Ethnology and Local History;
- Archaeology and Museum Studies.
Today more than 1,000 full-time and distance-learning students study at the Faculty of History. There are 90 Professors on the staff, 30 of whom are Full Professors and Doctors of History, 60 are Associate Professors and PhDs. Leading experts of the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Pedagogical Science of Ukraine, foreign Universities and other institutions are invited to lecture at the Faculty.
Students can undertake research work at special seminars and study groups, and share their findings at academic conferences. Graduate students who have the ability for research are recommended for postgraduate studies and there are more than 130 postgraduate students at present, with 11 working for a Doctor Degree in History and 15 for a higher postgraduate degree in History.
Specialization of the students is realized by studying the most important issues of the corresponding field of history, writing and submitting course, degree and Master's papers. Theoretical and practical knowledge that students obtain during their studies is strengthened during practical work at archaeological sites, museums, and ethnographic, archival, pedagogical and assistant practices.
The Faculty has long-term contact with foreign universities and research institutions.
The fundamental basis of study is a cycle of obligatory historical disciplines. The study of this complex of subjects gives the students the necessary amount of theoretical knowledge and practical skills of learning, teaching and researching history.
The students of the Faculty study in-depth both foreign languages and ancient languages including Latin, Greek and Old Slavonic.
The studying process is constantly being upgraded by using technological aids and computer technology, and all of the Departments and computer labs have access to the Internet.
The Faculty of History implements important educational work among the students aiming at the formation of responsibility for their chosen profession as future historians.
Study at the Faculty of History is realized on a full-time or distance-learning basis by study at three levels of academic degrees - BACHELOR, SPECIALIST and MASTER.

Study period:
Bachelor: full-time – 3 years 10 months, distance-learning – 4 years 10 months.
Specialist: full-time – 10 months, distance-learning – 10 months.
Master: full-time – 1 year 10 months, distance-learning – 1 year 10 months.
The languages of study for foreign citizens at the University are Ukrainian, Russian and English.
