FACULTY FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE, YOUTH AND SPORTS OF UKRAINE
TARAS SHEVCHENKO NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF KYIV
Geology Faculty
Volodymyr Mykhailov, Dean of the Geology Faculty, Doctor of Science, Professor, Head of the Department of Geology of Mineral Deposits
Geologists are trained at one of Ukraine’s best universities – Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where geology has been developing since its foundation. In 1944 the University opened a faculty concerned with the study of this science – the Geology Faculty.
Today students are trained by 64 lecturers and members of the research team of the Faculty (including experienced professionals of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine and leading industrial research institutes), including 24 PhDs and 31 staff members with higher postgraduate degrees.
Instruction at the Faculty involves advanced educational techniques and up-to-date information technology. Annual practical and field work is regarded as being extremely important.
The Faculty has trained over 10,000 highly qualified specialists and awarded dozens of PhD and higher postgraduate degrees. The Faculty offers programmes for postgraduate and PhD students. There are two specialized academic councils for appraising PhD and higher postgraduate theses.
The best students and postgraduate students of the Faculty enroll in various training and research programmes to study at leading educational and scientific institutions around the world, as well as individual programmes to get a second education abroad.
The Faculty comprises 7 Departments and a Museum of Geology, a research centre for physical and chemical studies of rocks, an Information Technology section, a laboratory for mineralogical and geochemical studies, and a laboratory of Theoretical and Applied Geophysics.
The basic disciplines fundamental to all areas of geological research are focused upon by the department of General and Historical Geology. Mastering of geological disciplines enables alumni to conduct geological research in various sectors, including geological surveys, and the compiling and processing of information on the geological structure of various areas of our planet. The Department of General and Historical Geology provides basic courses in General Geology for undergraduates of the Faculty regardless of their area of specialization. Traditionally, the Department develops certain scientific areas dealing with geological surveying and exploration work – stratigraphic and structural paleontology.
Graduates of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology search and explore groundwater resources, make geo-engineering decisions for the construction of buildings, carry out environmental assessment and the auditing of the Earth’s interior and geological environment utility.
Graduates of the Department of Geophysics are in demand as experts in geo-exploration work, including the search for oil and gas fields, metal and nonmetallic minerals, carrying out quantitative analysis of geophysical data using modern computer technology, research in the field of Earth physics, Ecological and Computer Geophysics, and the prediction and prevention of natural and man-made disasters.
Mineralogy, geochemistry and petrography are fundamental sciences in the study of the composition of rock complexes that make up the earth’s crust. Graduates of the Department of the same name work in manufacturing organizations of the State Geological Service, as well as in academic research institutes.
Taking into account the continual growth in global demand for energy resources, the geology of oil and gas has become one of the most crucial geological disciplines. Research in this field is carried out at the Department of the same name.
The processing, preservation, interpretation, modeling and visualization of geological information bring together all the various aspects of geology. Those specializing in Geoinformatics have to master modern information technology and means of processing digital information. The demand for graduates in this area is constantly growing.
The quintessence of geo-exploration work is the calculation of resources and commercial evaluation of mineral deposits. The vocational training of experts in this field is conducted by the Department of Geology of Mineral Deposits. The department is involved in prospecting and assessing mineral deposits both in Ukraine and abroad.
Instruction at the Geology Faculty is either full-time or distant learning to qualify for one of the three levels - Bachelor, Specialist, or Master.
