Lyudmyla Ivanivna Ostapchenko, Head of the Education and Science Center “Institute of Biology”, Professor, Doctor of Biological Science, Academician of the Academy of Science of Higher Education of Ukraine, Honored Scientist of Ukraine, Laureate of the Palladin Prize awarded by the National Academy of Science of Ukraine
The Education and Science Center “Institute of Biology” of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv was founded in May, 2010. It comprises Departments and the following research units: the Bohach Research Institute of Physiology, the Academician Fomin Botanical Garden, and the Kaniv Nature Reserve. The Department of Biology from which the Institute evolved was founded in 1933, after the reform of higher education in Ukraine in the 1920s. Two of its Departments (the Department of Botany and the Department of Zoology) were established as far back as 1834 within the Faculty of Philosophy of St. Volodymyr’s University. The Department of Human Physiology was founded in 1842 and the Department of Histology and Embryology in 1868 within the Faculty of Medicine.
The history of the University spans almost two centuries and contains such highlights as the work of internationally renowned scientists and biologists – including C. Kessler, I. Schmalhausen, S. Navashin, M. Holodniy, M. Severtsov, O. Palladin, D. Zerov, O. Kystyakivskiy, O. Khryshtal, A. Yemchenko, D. Vorontsov, P. Bohach, M. Kucherenko and many others.
Research and teaching staff at the Institute consists of more than 280 people, including 2 Academicians of the Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Science, 24 Professors, Doctors of Biological Science (PhDs), 36 Associate Professors, and 93 staff with higher postgraduate degrees. Among the staff there are 3 laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, 5 laureates of the Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv Prize, and 6 laureates of prizes for outstanding scientists awarded by the National Academy of Science of Ukraine.
The Institute comprises 12 departments:
Department of Biochemistry;
Department of Biophysics;
Department of General and Molecular Genetics;
Department of Microbiology and Immunology;
Department of Virology;
Department of Human and Animal Physiology;
Department of Plant Physiology and Ecology;
Department of Zoology;
Department of Botany;
Department of Cytology, Histology and Developmental Biology;
Department of Fundamental Medicine;
Department of Ecology
The Institute of Biology incorporates the Bohach Research Institute of Physiology and 15 research laboratories. In recent years, research work at the Institute has been carried out within two major Government research programmes entitled “Human Health” and “Environmental Protection”.
The Institute has close ties with various research institutes of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health, and the Ukrainian Academy of Agrarian Sciences. The Institute also works with 45 educational and research institutions in other countries, including the USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary, Belgium, Russia, Belarus, Taiwan and Vietnam.
Those students of the Institute of Biology, who come to study from other cities, may be provided with accommodation in a Hall of Residence.
